This Is What Healing Actually Looks Like Part 10

When “Regulation” Becomes Avoidance

There’s a subtle shift that can happen in this work.

And it’s important to name it.

Sometimes, what looks like “regulation”…

is actually avoidance.

It sounds like:

  • “I just need to regulate first”

  • “I don’t feel grounded enough to deal with this”

  • “Now isn’t a good time”

And sometimes, that’s true.

But sometimes…

It becomes a way to not engage at all.

Because let’s be honest:

Even when you’re regulated,
hard things are still hard.

Conversations are still uncomfortable.
Boundaries are still scary.
Vulnerability is still vulnerable.

Regulation doesn’t remove that.

It just makes it possible.

So if you find yourself:

  • constantly stepping away but never returning

  • waiting until you feel “perfectly calm” (which never comes)

  • using regulation as a reason to delay difficult things

It might be worth asking:

Am I regulating… or am I avoiding?

This isn’t about judgment.

It’s about honesty.

Because real healing requires both:

Regulation and engagement.

You regulate so that you can:

  • have the conversation

  • set the boundary

  • say the thing

  • make the change

Not so you can stay comfortable.

And this is where the work deepens.

Because now, it’s not just about how you feel—

It’s about what you do with that regulation.

That’s where patterns actually change.

And it’s also where self-trust is built.

Because you’re not just calming yourself down…

You’re showing yourself:

I can face hard things—and stay connected to myself while I do it.

With you in it,

Eva
