This Is What Healing Actually Looks Like Part 11

How You Know The Work is Working

At some point, people start to ask:

“Is this working?”
“Am I actually making progress?”

Because healing doesn’t always feel like progress.

Sometimes it feels like:

  • you’re more emotional

  • more aware of your triggers

  • more sensitive than you used to be

And it’s easy to wonder if you’re going backwards.

But you’re not.

You’re noticing.

Before, you may have been dysregulated all the time—
it just felt normal.

Now, you can feel the difference.

And that difference is where the work is happening.

You know the work is working when…

You catch yourself a little sooner than you used to.

Not at the very beginning.
But not at the very end either.

Somewhere in the middle.

You know the work is working when…

You start recognizing dysregulation in your body,
not just after your thoughts spiral.

The tightness.
The breath.
The tension.

And instead of ignoring it—

You pause.

You know the work is working when…

You can regulate enough to not say the thing
you would have said before.

Or you say it differently.

You know the work is working when…

You take space—and you come back.

To the conversation.
To the relationship.
To yourself.

You know the work is working when…

Your inner voice softens.

Not completely.

But enough that there’s another option besides criticism.

You know the work is working when…

You can sit with a feeling
without immediately trying to escape it.

You know the work is working when…

You start asking different questions:

Not “What’s wrong with me?”
But “What’s coming up for me?”

You know the work is working when…

You respond to yourself
with even a small amount of compassion.

Even if it feels unfamiliar.
Even if it doesn’t come naturally yet.

You know the work is working when…

You notice the urge to avoid—

And sometimes, you choose to stay.

Or you step away with the intention of returning.

You know the work is working when…

Your relationships begin to shift.

Not because everything is perfect—

But because you’re showing up differently.

More honest.
More aware.
More regulated.

And maybe most importantly…

You know the work is working when
you start to feel a sense of trust in yourself.

Not because you have everything figured out.

But because you know:

You can recognize when something is off.
You can come back to yourself.
You can handle what’s in front of you—
even if it’s hard.

That’s regulation.

That’s healing.

Not the absence of struggle.

But the presence of capacity.

The ability to move through activation
and find your way back.

Again and again.

This is what all of this has been about.

Not becoming a different person.

But having access to yourself
in moments where you used to lose it.

And if you’re somewhere in the middle of this process—

Still catching it late.
Still figuring it out.
Still practicing—

That counts.

That’s the work.

Because healing doesn’t show up as perfection.

It shows up as:

Earlier awareness.
Softer responses.
More intentional choices.

And over time…

A life that feels more manageable.
More connected.
More your own.

This is what healing actually looks like.

 Yours,

Eva
