Edges

Growth involves edges. These edges represent the limits of our capacity, discovered naturally as we expand. Expansion often leads us to uncomfortable moments where we encounter the boundary of what is known and familiar. In these moments, our instinct is to shrink back into the safety of what we know. This rhythm of expansion and contraction can feel disorienting, making us cling to what feels “safe.” However, this constriction isn’t a step backward—it’s part of the growth process. Recognizing this rhythm can replace shame and guilt with perspective and a sense of normalcy.

Nature mirrors this rhythm beautifully. I recently watched an Instagram reel showing a time-lapse of a flower bud opening. The flower opened slightly, then shrank back partially, repeating this cycle until it fully blossomed. We see the same rhythm in our breath—an inhale expands, and an exhale contracts. Look anywhere in the natural world, and this rhythm is present: in the clouds, the trees, and the tides.

This pattern isn’t limited to nature; it also happens in our emotional selves and relationships. Unless something is stagnant, it’s growing and expanding. Self-sabotage often occurs when we resist this natural rhythm, staying small and clinging to the familiar. The very growth we desire can feel threatening because it requires stepping into the unknown.

But consider this: what is the cost of staying small? What do we sacrifice by choosing the known over the possibilities waiting beyond our edges? It takes courage to grow, and it’s rarely an easy choice. Most growth is forced upon us by circumstances, but consciously choosing to embrace discomfort opens new worlds of possibility.

This risk is not without rewards. Every time we expand, even in fear, we claim new ground, change patterns, and disrupt cycles. Life invites us daily to grow, to step into faith, and to trust in a guiding force greater than ourselves. With each step, we increase our capacity for joy, love, and freedom.

So, ask yourself: What do you want more of? The same? Or something greater?
